So you've found the perfect new loft or apartment and you're scouring Pinterest for creative ways to decorate. Sound familiar? Living in an apartment does come with some restraints on space, but this should not prevent you from adding your own decorative touch! Even with the challenges you may face with storage and places to add different accents, there are ways to utilize the space to make it your own and do it in a greener way that is great for the environment and even better for you.
#1. Add Color
Although you may not be able to paint the walls or any of the permanent fixtures, you can decorate your furniture to add more color. You do not have to spend a lot to have nice furniture in your apartment. You can find some great pieces at a thrift store or yard sale to refurbish.
Once you have found the right piece for your apartment, you can then figure out what color you want to paint it. By doing a little sanding and painting, you can have a whole new piece for your room that brings in more color and design that flow with your taste. Remember when you refurbish something; you are saving material and money. Consider using milk or chalk paint; both offer a variety of colors and finishes and are non-toxic. #2. Place Greenery Around the Apartment
Add some greenery into your home. You can purchase some houseplants to add to the dcor. Placed in a variety of containers such as baskets, ceramic and terracotta pots, plants can become decorative accents as well as having the added benefit of cleaning the air. Greenery is always a classic item that goes with any dcor you may be working with. If you are looking for something with more color, you can even get some flowers. It will make your home smell good and add a personalized touch to the apartment.
#3. Multipurpose Furniture
There is not a greener way to decorate your home than purchasing or making multipurpose furniture. Only buy furniture that has extra storage space or purchase a bed that folds up for more space. Decorating your apartment in a greener fashion is easier when you have more than one goal in mind.
When shopping for a new piece of furniture always ask yourself if you can use it for more than one purpose in your home. This will allow you to utilize the piece in a variety of ways as your needs or lifestyle change. For example, a dresser or changing table in a nursery could later become a storage piece in a home office or buffet in the dining room.
#4. Making Your Own Housing Items
A big part of having a greener apartment is making items from your own materials. You can also find cheap materials at local fabric shops. Instead of spending a lot of money on table cloths and other decorating materials you do not even care for you can easily make those items yourself. Use an old sheet and turn it into a curtain. Getting a little creative is an exciting, but very green way to decorate your apartment.
#5.Using Less Energy
If you are going to go green in decorating your apartment, then you have to think about energy. There are many items you can purchase that offer the benefit of using less energy. Keep this in mind if you are buying new appliances for your apartment as well.
That stove might be free, but think of the energy it will consume in your humble abode. It might be worth the money in the long run to purchase a newer, more energy efficient stove. Appliances have a lot of say in your apartment decorating, so don't forget about the green impact they can leave on your home dcor.
There are a lot of ways you can make your apartment a little more green in terms of decorations. Just remember that even the smallest difference can make a huge impact on the environment.
